PERRY-WYNNS FISH CO., INC.

Perry-Wynns Fish Co., Inc. was begun in 1953 by two individuals experienced in processing and marketing salt fish products.  Today a grandson of one founder and the son of the other continue this tradition.  The plant is located on the beautiful Chowan River in northeastern North Carolina.  At this location the river is two miles wide.

The herring used for Chowan Brand products are anadromous fish known as river herring, which is a generic name given to a combination of alewives and blue back herring.  From the 1950's thru the early 1980's, during the "herring run" that occurred during March and April, the company employed more than four hundred local people.  At that time the company was recognized as the largest fresh water herring fishery in the world.

Many changes have taken place in the last thirty years.  All of the herring product now comes from a contract producer located in New Brunswick, Canada. The herring roe is processed and canned locally using fresh product trucked to the plant overnight from the Canada plant.  One of the operators is on site each year when production is taking place.  The Colerain plant stores the fish products in two hundred twenty-five (225) pound plastic barrels.  The fish are packaged into consumer sized packages only a few days before being shipped to grocery distributors.

For a variety of reasons salt mackerel has not been available for several years.  We are happy to inform our customers that we now have salt mackerel fillets.
